“CHOYA Ume-musubi” is named after the traditional Mizuhiki called the ‘ume-musubi’ (ume knot). Since the knot cannot be easily undone, it symbolizes a strong and unbreakable bond. This auspicious knot is often used as a charm for protection and to ward off evil, and is also featured in celebratory occasions, such as decorating gift envelopes and presents.
What is Mizuhiki?
It refers to the decorative string, known as Mizuhiki, which is tied around gift envelopes and packages for occasions such as weddings, funerals, and celebrations. The shape and color of the Mizuhiki vary depending on the occasion. Nowadays, it is increasingly common to use printed versions on noshi (ceremonial paper) or wrapping paper.
The ume has been cherished since ancient times as a symbol of health and protection from evil. It endures the harsh winter to bloom with beautiful, fragrant flowers at the first sign of spring, and its round fruit is considered a symbol of promising beginnings and rising fortune.
